The Mobility Brief

This month, we examine the systems and science that support mobility across different scopes. We start with a global view, as Manuel Montero-Odasso presents a characterization of transnational geriatrics education initiatives and their potential for alignment. Following this, Robert Teasell, Jamie Fleet, Michael Payne, Ricardo Viana, and Sue Peters turn to the specifics of clinical trials, identifying the frequency and heterogeneity of outcome measures used in lower extremity stroke rehabilitation research. The issue concludes by looking at patient-specific anatomy, with work from Eldon Loh on using 3D modeling and fluoroscopic imaging to identify biomarkers in lumbar vertebrae for a pain medicine procedure.

How do the world's different geriatrics training programs work together?
The existence of many separate transnational initiatives in geriatrics education calls for a more integrated and equitable global framework. To work toward this, researchers conducted a mapping exercise and consulted with experts to map and characterize these programs based on their scope, target audience, and contributions.

Can a bony landmark on a spinal x-ray personalize a back pain procedure?
Variations in the anatomy of the lower spine necessitate a more patient-specific approach to performing a type of radiofrequency procedure for back pain. To investigate this, researchers created 3D models from sixty human lumbar vertebrae and sacra, using custom code and simulated fluoroscopic imaging to perform a morphometric analysis.
